Lets step back in time to where all good stories start…In the beginning while John and I were getting to know each other he was a long haul truck driver and was very playful. One evening at a stop he met Dawn at a truck stop in California and had some wild and crazy nights with her. A few months later Dawn told John she was pregnant (big shock from a woman frequenting truck stops for sex I know) she said she wanted an abortion and wanted John to help her out.
He knew that he was not able to be there for this child as he is a Canadian citizen living in Canada he said yes. Okay are we ready for the best part…as predicted by many Dawn was only using John for the money and Michelle was born July 30, 2002. Needless to say John was surprised by the call from Dawn telling him he was a dad. This was the first and only time that Dawn called John until 2004. Don’t you love the sense of family!!!
Ironically while Dawn was out gallivanting around truck stops looking for a quick lay she was still married to Anthony. After finding out that she was pregnant her mother disowned her for the umpteenth time in her life and she moved in with Anthony’s mom. Anthony’s mom Louise wanted to be sure that the things that she did to Danae (Fetal Alcohol and no prenatal care) did not happen to yet another child.
In November 2004 John and I were driving to Texas to deliver a load of apples and John decided to try to track Dawn down to see how their daughter was doing. He called her mother in California and was told that Dawn was married and living in Texas but that she would pass along his number. Shortly thereafter a call was received from Dawn and we met up with her, Danae and Michelle in Dallas/Ft. Worth for about an hour and half. It was an enjoyable visit in which Michelle called John “Dad” for the first time. Even after this pretty good meeting we did not have any more contact with Dawn again until 2006.
In February 2006 John yet again tracked Dawn down. Do we see a pattern here…she was living in California this time. She was separated from her husband claiming abuse and living in squalor in a roach infested apartment with Danae, Michelle, and her son Connor. Apparently Connor was born in 2004 shortly after our visit with her. When John visited this apartment he was appalled and suggested to Dawn that she move back to her mother’s home to provide a safer cleaner home for her three children. No one was aware of the craziness that was lurking around in that home.
For about 4 months John was taking Dawn, Danae (as school allowed), Michelle and Connor around Southern California in his truck all expenses paid. During this time Dawn and John spoke about everything under the hot Californian sun including his relationship with me. They talked about Dawn furthering her education and Dawn wanted to be a truck driver/school bus driver so that she could earn an honest living. If Dawn wanted to go back to school who would look after the children, this is when Dawn told John that Danae was in a guardianship and her mother, Terese was supposed to look after Danae. I was asked if Michelle and Connor could stay with us for six months to a year in Canada for her to further her education. John and I talked and he wanted to get to know Michelle better and to give her a better start in life. This is where my story begins in earnest.
